Frequently Asked Questions
What is your teaching philosophy?
Like Plutarch, I believe that “the correct analogy for the mind is not a vessel that needs filling, but wood that needs igniting.” I generally follow a social constructivist perspective where I try to guide you to help you make meaning of physics for yourself. As such, I will try to connect the material to your interests and to help you find meaning in what you are learning.
Where are you located?
I am currently in Mexico City and my tutoring is virtually through video chat.
What languages do you speak?
I speak English, but one day I hope to be able to teach physics in Spanish as well.
What equipment do I need?
You’ll need a stable internet connection and a working camera and microphone on your device. Having a tablet that you can share your screen is helpful for us to talk through physics problems, but this isn’t absolutely necessary as you can work on paper and show me your work on camera.
What is your teaching background?
I taught physics at the University of Texas at Austin to more than 5,500 students, across both algebra-based and calculus-based courses. I’ve seen how students arrive with very different levels of high school preparation and I know how to tailor and explain physics to diverse groups of students accordingly.
What levels or courses do you tutor?
I work with students across the full physics sequence from high school Honors Physics and AP Physics through calculus-based introductory physics at the university level. If you're not sure where to start, I’m happy to talk through your school's specific sequence and prerequisites with you.
What is the format of the tutoring sessions?
Each hour we will start with trying to understand where you are in your physics learning. We will talk about areas where you are struggling with. I’ll give you some pointers and we will spend most of the time working on different physics problems together, using screen sharing so I can see your work in real time (an iPad or tablet app like Notes or Noteworthy works well, but pen and paper held up to the camera works too). I’ll give you a bit of time to work on a problem and then we will work on it together. Throughout the session you will be engaging in active learning to help you better grasp the material and be better prepared for your exams.
How much do sessions cost?
Sessions are $100 each, billed individually.
Can I book one session at a time?
Yes, I want to provide value to you as a student, so please book one session if you would like and then we can go from there. Depending on your situation you may only need one session to talk about a few issues that you are having with physics concepts, but I am more than happy to work with you for a longer time period if you would like additional help.
What if I cannot afford it?
Please send me a message and I would be happy to discuss this with you on an individual basis.
